‘END THE OCCUPATION!’ DEMONSTRATION IN TAXIM SQUARE ON 24 SEPTEMBER 2005
The Global Peace and Justice Coalition in Turkey will be participating in the international day of action on 24 September with a mass press conference in Istanbul (A press conference is what we do when it is difficult to obtain permission for a demonstration. Effectively, the conference turns into a demonstration).
By a lucky coincidence, the European Social Forum Preparatory Meeting will be held in Istanbul on 23-24-25 September. Many anti-war and anti-capitalist activists from across Europe will be in Istanbul for the meeting, and this gives a great opportunity to have a real international demonstration on the 24th.
We are very pleased to hear that there are also going to be activities and demonstrations in such countries as England, Avustralia, Canada, Ireland and Greece.
We believe that particularly after the bombings in London and Egypt, there is an attempt at generalised war-mongering based on a so-called “war against terorism”. It is, therefore, more important than ever to expand the movement against war and occupation and against Bush and his gang.
Iraqi civilians are being killed everyday. Iran is being threatened increasingly belligerently by Bush and his gang. Meanwhile, the Turkish government is trying to become part of the occupation by giving permission to Washington to use the Incirlik military base in South-eastern Turkey.
On the other hand, the resistance in Iraq is spreading. In America the campaign around Cindy Sheehan gives heart and inspiration to all anti-war activists across the world.
After 24 September, we shall be continuing and stepping up our campaign for the closure of the Incirlik military base until 19 March.
Keep up the anti-war movement until victory!
